The Reading Room

At the heart of the Athenaeum is its famous library. The reading room has been called “ one of the handsomest rooms in Europe”. It is frequently used as a TV and film location. The Library has some 60,000 items in stock in the reading room, on two floors, one of which is glass. A further three bookcases stand in the Newsroom and Committee Room housing rare books and the Roscoe collection.

About the Reading Room

The Reading Room is one of the most striking and peaceful rooms in the club. Surrounded by historic books and filled with soft, natural light, it offers a calm and thoughtful atmosphere that invites people to slow down and take in their surroundings. The shelves, architecture, and quiet presence of the room create a strong sense of history, making it a place that feels both inspiring and comforting.

It is a lovely space to pause, look around, and enjoy some quiet time in a truly unique setting. Members often use the Reading Room for reading, reflection, or quiet conversation, appreciating the sense of stillness it provides. The room encourages focus and curiosity, offering a gentle escape from busier areas of the club while remaining warm and welcoming.

Events in the Reading Room

Events in the Reading Room always feel special because of the room’s character and history. The setting naturally adds depth and meaning to any occasion held here. We often host lectures, readings, small receptions, cultural events, and intimate gatherings in this space, where the surroundings enhance the experience rather than distract from it.

The room’s quiet elegance and thoughtful atmosphere make it ideal for events that encourage reflection, discussion, or storytelling. Guests are often drawn to the beauty and calm of the space, which helps create a memorable and engaging experience. Whether for a formal talk or a small, personal gathering, the Reading Room adds a sense of occasion that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.
